Carbon Credits Coming to Turkey
Mehmet Şimşek, Turkey's Minister of Treasury and Finance, recently shared the latest economic insights and assessments at the Climate Economy Sustainability Finance Summit. In his speech, Şimşek emphasized that climate change has become an undeniable reality. He noted that the impacts of the climate crisis will be felt even more in the coming years, making green transformation a necessity for Turkey. Şimşek stated that Turkey aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2053. To reach this goal, he highlighted the need for taxing carbon emissions and reducing fossil fuel subsidies, indicating that the implementation of a carbon credit system in Turkey is essential. Through the carbon credit system, investments in environmentally friendly projects will be promoted, helping to reduce emissions and provide financing for these projects.
What is a Carbon Credit?
A carbon credit emerged as a solution for businesses exceeding greenhouse gas emission quotas set by international agreements. These credits represent a permit that allows the emission of one ton of carbon dioxide or an equivalent amount of other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. While carbon credits are more commonly used by companies, they are also suitable for individual use. In this context, financial instruments like carbon credits play a vital role in increasing environmental responsibility among businesses and individuals.
